BALI

Bali, also called Pulau Dewata, is located in the heart of the Indonesian archipelago between the islands of Java and Lombok.

Because of its location, 8 degrees south of the equator, Bali enjoys a tropical climate. Bali is a small island, less than 140 km from east to west and 90 kilometers from south to north.

A chain of six volcanoes, between 1.350 meters and 3.014 meters high, stretches from west to east. There are lush tropical forests, pristine crater lakes, fast flowing rivers in deep ravines, picturesque rice terraces, and fertile vegetable and fruit gardens. The beaches in the south consist of white sand whereas beaches in other parts of the island are mostly covered with gray or black volcanic sand.

93% of the population of 3.5 million people are Balinese Hindu, but there is also a minority of other religions with 5% Moslem, 1.5% Christian and 0.5% Buddhist.

Bali is famous for its highly developed arts including dance, painting, sculpture, leather, metal working, music and also known around the world for its unique traditions & customs which are mostly influenced by the Balinese Hindu religion.

The Balinese have a traditional calendar which determines the daily life of the Balinese with innumerable ceremonies throughout the Balinese year. The most famous ceremonies are the cremations, temple ceremonies, Galungan & Kuningan and the Balinese New Year.

Balinese and Bahasa Indonesia are the most widely spoken languages in Bali but, because of the large numbers of international tourists, English is also very common.
