SUMATRA
Sumatra (also spelt Sumatera) is the sixth largest island in the world (approximately 470,000 km˛) and is the largest island of Indonesia. The interior of the island is dominated by two geographical regions; the Barisan Mountains in the west and swampy plains in the east. The backbone of the island is the Barisan mountain
chain. The volcanic activity of this region has endowed the region with fertile land and beautiful scenery, and in particular around Lake Toba.
The lake and the highland of northern Sumatra are home of the Bataks, while the northernmost coast is dominated by Acehs. The west is inhabited by the Minangkabau people. The
majority of Sumatra’s population are Muslim (90%) but most central Bataks are Protestant Christians. The remainder of the population are Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic and the traditional Chinese religion.
Sumatra also has an incredible variety of flora including the Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower, and fauna including the
Sumatran Tiger, Rhinoceros, Elephant and the famous Orang Utans which can only be found here and in Borneo (Kalimantan).
